Prades, Villefranche-de-Conflent, Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet, Tautavel: Perpignan sits at the centre of all our routes. The closest, the Llech and the Tautavel cliffs, are 40 minutes away; the furthest, the Thuès hot-water canyon, just over an hour.
Each card shows the driving time from central Perpignan. For a half-day trip, add the drive to the stated duration: with a 9 am meeting time, you're back in town by early afternoon on most routes.
Approximate driving times from the centre of Perpignan, without traffic.
From Perpignan, the choice depends less on distance than on what you're looking for: everything is between 40 minutes and just over an hour away. Canyoning runs in summer, from June to September; caving and via ferrata all year, like the Thuès hot-water canyon, fed by springs at 35 °C.
Along the N116, which climbs the Têt valley, Prades and Villefranche-de-Conflent bring together the Llech, the Castellane, the caves and the Souterrata via ferrata, 40 to 50 minutes away. The Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet via ferratas are 50 minutes away, the Tautavel and Vingrau cliffs 40.
With young children, go for the Castellane (from age 7) or, underground, the En Gorner discovery trip (from age 7). The Llech, the area's legendary canyon with a dozen giant slides, is a sporty canyon from age 14, recommended for people who have done canyoning before.
A canyon takes 2 to 4 hours on site. Including the drive, allow a morning or an afternoon: the rest of the day is free for the beach.
The Souterrata via ferrata and the En Gorner caves start from the same car park in Villefranche-de-Conflent: one in the morning, the other in the afternoon, without getting back in the car.
From October to May, the classic canyons are closed. That leaves the Thuès hot-water canyon, caving and via ferrata: plenty to do in winter too.
On site, most trips fit into half a day. Allow the whole day for Exploration Canalettes, Aquatique En Gorner, Merveilles En Gorner and Grande Voie de Vingrau.
The Llech near Prades, about 40 minutes' drive: a sporty canyon from age 14, recommended for people who have done canyoning before. For beginners, the Castellane at Molitg-les-Bains is open from age 7, 50 minutes away. Both run from June to September.
Yes. The Castellane gorge at Molitg-les-Bains (about 50 minutes) welcomes children from age 7: natural slides and jumps of 2 to 5 m. No jump is ever compulsory, on any route. You do need to be able to swim.
At the start of each route, not in Perpignan: you make your own way there. The exact spot is listed in the programme on each route's page.
The Thuès hot-water canyon, about 1 h 05 from Perpignan, runs all year in pools between 30 and 40 °C. Caving at Villefranche-de-Conflent, 45 minutes away, is also possible in every season: underground, the temperature doesn't change.
