Head down the Têt valley: 30 minutes away, the Thuès canyon flows at 35 °C all year round. In winter it's the resort's other outing; in summer, the gateway to the canyons around Prades.
From Font-Romeu, the road runs down the Têt valley to Thuès, Villefranche-de-Conflent and then Prades: the routes follow in that order. The Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet via ferratas and the Tautavel and Vingrau cliffs are an hour and a half or more away.
Approximate driving times from the centre of Font-Romeu, without traffic.
Font-Romeu has two seasons, and so do our routes. In winter, between two ski days or when the snow is thin, the Thuès hot-water canyon and the Villefranche-de-Conflent caves work in any weather: one in water at 35 °C, the others at a constant temperature underground.
In summer, the same road leads to the canyons around Prades: the Llech 50 minutes away, the Castellane an hour. Trips take half a day, leaving the other half for the mountains.
Thuès is a beginner route from age 10: six abseils, the last one 40 m, between pools of warm water. A way to discover canyoning without getting cold, and the only canyon in the region you can do in the depths of winter.
At Thuès, you step out of 35 °C water into mountain air. Keep warm, dry clothes in the car for the drive back.
Wind, poor snow or just fancy a change: the hot-water canyon and caving don't depend on snow cover.
Allow 30 minutes to Thuès and 45 to Villefranche-de-Conflent on the N116. In winter, check road conditions before setting off.
On site, most trips fit into half a day. Allow the whole day for Exploration Canalettes, Aquatique En Gorner, Merveilles En Gorner and Grande Voie de Vingrau.
Yes: the Thuès hot-water canyon, 30 minutes away, runs all year. Its pools stay between 30 and 40 °C, fed by hot springs. A neoprene wetsuit is provided.
Mainly the water temperature: 30 to 40 °C, versus cold water in the other canyons. The route itself is a real canyon, with six abseils from 5 to 40 m.
Yes. Underground, the temperature stays around 14 °C all year, whether or not it's snowing outside. The Villefranche-de-Conflent caves are 45 minutes from Font-Romeu, from age 7 for the En Gorner discovery trip.
The road down to Thuès leads to the canyons around Prades: the Castellane (from age 7) an hour away, and the Llech (a sporty canyon from age 14, recommended if you've done canyoning before) about 50 minutes away. They run from June to September.
