Le Barcarès lives between the sea and the Salses-Leucate lagoon, with its beaches, campsites and the Lydia, the liner sitting on the sand. Our routes are inland, and the first is closer than you'd think: Vingrau is 35 minutes away.
The nearest cliffs are demanding: the Vingrau multi-pitch route (from age 16) requires you to climb independently, and the Tautavel cliffs (from age 12) are for experienced climbers. For a first time, the Casteil cliffs, at the foot of the Canigó, are open from age 7, 1 h 15 away.
For families, the Pitchona via ferrata at Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet is open from age 8, all year round, 55 minutes away. For canyoning, the Castellane is open from age 7, from June to September, 1 h 05 away.
Vingrau and Tautavel are neighbours: after a morning on the rock, the Tautavel prehistory museum fills the afternoon nicely.
Times are calculated without traffic. In July and August, leaving Le Barcarès and getting round Perpignan can lengthen the drive: set off early.
From October to May, the classic canyons are closed. Climbing at Vingrau and Tautavel runs from March to the end of November; via ferrata and caving stay open all year.
On site, most trips fit into half a day. Allow the whole day for Exploration Canalettes, Aquatique En Gorner, Merveilles En Gorner and Grande Voie de Vingrau.
The Llech at Prades, about 55 minutes away: a sporty canyon, from age 14, recommended if you've done canyoning before. For beginners, the Castellane is open from age 7, 1 h 05 away. Both run from June to September.
The nearest cliffs, Vingrau and Tautavel, are for experienced climbers. For a first time, the Casteil cliffs are open from age 7, about 1 h 15 away.
The Pitchona via ferrata is open from age 8, 55 minutes away; the En Gorner discovery trip, underground at Villefranche-de-Conflent, from age 7, an hour away. For canyoning, the Castellane is open from age 7, 1 h 05 away.
At the start of each route, in the village shown on its page: Vingrau or Tautavel for climbing, Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet for the via ferrata, Prades for the Llech.
